Common Mistakes New Temu Sellers Make (And How to Avoid Them)

At SellerSpring, we've helped hundreds of UK sellers launch on Temu. Through that experience, we've identified a consistent set of mistakes that new sellers make — often the same mistakes, in the same order, with the same consequences. The good news is that every single one of them is avoidable.

This guide covers the nine most common errors we see, explains why they hurt your account, and shows you exactly how to avoid each one. If you're launching on Temu for the first time, consider this your pre-flight checklist.

Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Product Category

This is the single most common mistake, and it has cascading consequences. Temu uses your category selection to determine which search queries trigger your listing, what commission rate you pay, and which compliance requirements apply. Choose wrong, and your product may be invisible to the customers searching for it — or it may be flagged for compliance documentation you don't actually need.

How to avoid it: Before listing, search for your product on Temu and look at where the top results are categorised. Navigate Temu's category tree to the most specific sub-category that matches your product. If in doubt, err on the side of specificity — a product listed in "Garden Tools > Pruning Shears" will perform far better than one listed in "Garden > Tools > General."

Mistake #2: Copying Amazon Listings Verbatim

Your Amazon listings are optimised for Amazon's A9 algorithm, Amazon's customer base, and Amazon's content requirements. None of these translate directly to Temu. Sellers who copy-paste their Amazon titles and descriptions onto Temu consistently underperform compared to those who create Temu-native listings.

How to avoid it: Treat Temu as a separate platform with its own best practices. Rewrite your titles using the format Temu's algorithm rewards (brand + product type + key features + material + use case). Restructure your descriptions for mobile-first browsing. Re-optimise your keywords based on Temu's search behaviour, not Amazon's.

Mistake #3: Poor Product Photography

Temu is a visual, discovery-driven platform. Your main image is essentially an advertisement — it determines whether a browsing customer stops to look at your product or keeps scrolling. Using low-quality supplier images, images with watermarks, or images that don't meet Temu's requirements will cripple your listing's performance from day one.

How to avoid it: Invest in proper product photography. Your main image should be on a white background, minimum 800×800 pixels (we recommend 1200×1200), with the product filling at least 85% of the frame. Include 6–8 images total, covering different angles, the product in use, close-up details, and size comparisons.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the Honeymoon Period

New Temu listings receive a temporary algorithmic boost — a "honeymoon period" lasting approximately 10–14 days where the platform gives your product additional visibility to test its performance. This is your single best chance to establish strong organic rankings. Sellers who launch unprepared waste this opportunity and face a much harder path to visibility afterwards.

How to avoid it: Have everything ready before your listing goes live. Images finalised, title optimised, description complete, shipping set up, inventory in stock. Then, during the first two weeks, dispatch every order within 24 hours, respond to every customer message immediately, and avoid making any major listing changes that could reset the algorithm's evaluation.

Mistake #5: Missing or Incomplete Compliance Documentation

Temu runs a compliance review on all new listings. Products that require specific safety certifications (CE/UKCA marks, cosmetics product notifications, toy safety certifications) must have documentation submitted before listings are approved. Missing documentation causes listing blocks that can delay your launch by days or weeks.

How to avoid it: Before creating any listing, determine what compliance documentation your product category requires. Prepare all documentation in advance and submit it as part of your initial listing process. Common requirements include:

SellerSpring handles all compliance: As part of our listing service, we pre-check every product against Temu's compliance requirements and prepare all required documentation before submission. This is why our clients almost never experience compliance-related delays.

Mistake #6: Setting the Wrong Price

Pricing on Temu is different from pricing on Amazon. Temu's algorithm favours competitively priced products, and Temu shoppers are generally more price-sensitive. But "competitive" doesn't mean "cheapest" — it means appropriately priced for the perceived quality of your listing.

How to avoid it: Research the top 10 results for your primary keyword on Temu. Price within 10–15% of the median. If your product is genuinely higher quality, price up to 20% above median — but make sure your images and description clearly communicate that quality difference. And always consider building shipping into your price to offer "free delivery."

Mistake #7: Slow Dispatch Times

Dispatch speed is one of the most heavily weighted seller metrics on Temu. Sellers who consistently take 48 hours to dispatch receive measurably less algorithmic visibility than those who dispatch within 24 hours. In the critical first few weeks after launch, slow dispatch can permanently damage your listing's ranking potential.

How to avoid it: Set up your fulfilment workflow before your first listing goes live. Make sure you have packaging materials ready, courier accounts active, and a clear process for receiving and processing Temu orders. If you use a 3PL, ensure the Temu order integration is tested and working before launch day. Target dispatch within 24 hours for every order, especially in your first month.

Mistake #8: Not Filling In All Product Attributes

When creating a listing, Temu presents you with a series of product attributes — material, colour, size, weight, target audience, and more. Many of these are marked as "optional," and many sellers skip them. This is a mistake. Our testing shows that listings with complete attribute data rank 15–25% higher in category browse views than those with minimal attributes.

How to avoid it: Fill in every single attribute field, including optional ones. Be accurate and specific — don't select "Other" when a more precise option is available. Complete attributes help the algorithm understand your product, match it to relevant searches, and display it in appropriate browse categories.

Mistake #9: Treating Temu as an Afterthought

Perhaps the most damaging mistake isn't a specific tactical error — it's an attitude. Sellers who treat Temu as an afterthought, listing a few products half-heartedly and checking in once a week, see mediocre results and conclude that the platform "doesn't work." Meanwhile, sellers who give Temu the same attention they give their primary channel see it become one of their fastest-growing revenue streams.

How to avoid it: Treat your Temu launch with the same seriousness you'd give any business-critical project. Invest in proper product photography. Write optimised, platform-native listings. Set up efficient fulfilment processes. Monitor your metrics. Respond to customers promptly. The sellers who do this are the ones generating £10k+ in monthly GMV within their first quarter.

The Pattern

Notice a pattern? Most of these mistakes come from one of two causes: rushing the setup, or treating Temu as identical to Amazon. The sellers who take the time to set up properly and approach Temu as its own platform — with its own algorithm, its own customer base, and its own best practices — are the ones who succeed.

You don't need to be perfect. You just need to avoid the obvious pitfalls. And if you want to eliminate the risk entirely, that's exactly what SellerSpring is for.
